AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ MIT researchers use AI used to defeat killer bacteria
[The News] Researchers from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, MIT, and Harvard were able to use AI to find a novel type of antibiotic that combats a troublesome drug-resistant bacteria.
The specific bacteria? Actinetobacter baumanii
The issue with this particular bacteria is that it lives and thrives in health care environments, such as hospital surfaces, and is capable of weaponizing DNA from other creatures with which it comes into contact, allowing it to develop resistance to compounds meant to kill it.
[The AI] The technique the team used was called high-throughput drug screening. Scientists cultured the bacteria in lab dishes for many weeks before exposing the colonies to over 7,500 chemicals.
The end result was that 480 compounds blocked the growth of the bad bacteria.
This information was then fed into a computer to train an AI algorithm, and soon after, the AI model was able to predict whether molecules were antibacterial or not.
They were left with 1 compound, called RS102895, that prevents the bacteria from traveling from inside the cell to its surface.
Looking forward… So far, the working antibiotic has been tested on the skin of mice that were infected with the harmful bacteria, with great success.
According to the researchers, the antibiotic will need to be further tested in human clinical trials before it is released for universal use.
2/ JP Morgan announces ChatGPT-like investment service
[The News] If you bank with JPMorgan Chase, you may soon be able to use AI to help you choose investments.
Called IndexGPT, the bank has trademarked a ChatGPT-like software service that incorporates “cloud computing software using artificial intelligence” for “analyzing and selecting securities tailored to customer needs.”
The bank intends to use AI that is "powered by generative, pre-trained transformer models," according to the filing.
[Why this matters] The huge concern that has probably crossed your mind is, "What will happen to the thousands of financial counselors out there?"
If AI is capable of offering better investment suggestions than a human, then the advisor role will become obsolete.
But for now, the company is testing the GPT technology and testing potential use cases that could be used to enhance the customer and employee experience.

3/ NY lawyer in trouble after using ChatGPT to prove case
[The News] A New York lawyer, Steven A. Schwartz, used ChatGPT for legal research in a case and is now facing legal consequences.
According to the BBC, the lawyer was handling a case involving a man suing an airline over an alleged personal injury.
In order to get the case approved, the legal team wrote up a brief that cited previous court examples.
The BIG problem? The cases were nonexistent…
Even after Schwartz asked ChatGPT to verify sources.
Schwartz claims that he was “unaware that its content could be false” and that he “greatly regrets” relying on the chatbot.
4/ AI reconnects brain and spine, helping paralyzed man walk again
[The News] After being paralyzed in a biking accident 12 years ago, a man named Oskam is now able to walk thanks to AI-powered implants that re-established the connection between the brain and the spinal cord.
[The AI] The technology was built on the work of French neuroscientist Grégoire Courtine and continued by France’s Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and, in its final state, can stimulate the lower spine and help someone who is paralyzed walk again.
How it works? The brain-computer interface decodes real-time brain recordings using AI-powered algorithms, allowing the computer to determine how the patient intends to move their legs.
Simply: Oskam needs to think about walking to start.
It took Oskam six months of training to regain some of the sensory perception and motor skills he had lost.
