AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ The 5 pillars of US AI legislation, announced
Last week, we talked about the EU AI Act. This week, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer followed up with the announcement of an AI framework that will shape AI legislation in the US.
Here’s the skinny:
[The News] Called the “SAFE Innovation for AI” Framework, here are the 5 pillars that supports the framework (shortened for your reading pleasure):
Security: Protect national security by assessing AI threats from foreign adversaries or rogue groups and ensuring economic stability for low-skilled, low-income workers.
Accountability: Help creators by tackling copyright issues and protecting intellectual property. Create "responsible" methods to eliminate disinformation and bias.
Foundations: Require AI systems to uphold democratic ideals, guard elections, promote AI's benefits while avoiding harm, and prevent the Chinese Communist Party from setting AI policy.
Explain: Businesses should explain how the AI system reached an answer in simple terms so users may understand why and where it originated from.
Innovation: Support U.S. AI innovation that unlocks AI's potential and maintains its leadership.
Looking forward… Beginning this fall, Schumer announced that he will be launching a series of “AI Insight Forums,” where experts and industry leaders will gather to discuss and form a stronger foundation for future AI policy proposals to Congress.
The AI forums will discuss copyright and intellectual property, national security, the workforce, and “guarding against doomsday scenarios.”
2/ AI + Marvel = Controversy
[The News] It’s confirmed: The opening credit sequence for Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” series was created using AI.
Why?
According to Ali Selim, one of the series’ executive producers, he reveals that the decision to do so “felt right” as it fit the plot of the story. (Plot: Nick Fury discovers shape-shifting Skrulls who have assumed human leadership posts worldwide.
With the help of Method Studios, the team was able to create a montage of moving paintings that depict the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth.
A bit out of his element, Selim skims over how the process worked:
“We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change.”
[Why this matters] From an artistic level, incorporating AI may have been a bold decision as AI has not been welcomed with open arms in the creative community.
Without exposing too much, people on social media are not happy that the opening credits could have a job for a human designer or animator…
But instead, Disney chose to utilize AI and not talent…
…therefore taking job opportunities away.
Will this affect the ratings for the show in the near future?
I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

4/ The Grammys update AI music rules for 2024
[The News] On Tuesday, the 66th Grammy Awards announced that "only human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration for, nominated for, or win a Grammy award," although AI-assisted music will be considered.
PLUS…the human authorship component of the work submitted must be meaningful and more than de minimis,” with de minimis defined as “lacking significance or importance.”
AND…the human element must also be relevant to the appropriate Grammy category, while songs that contain “no human authorship” are not eligible in any category.
[Why this matters] CEO Harvey Mason Jr. address his thoughts on AI in music.
Here’s what he said:
“AI is going to absolutely, unequivocally have a hand in shaping the future of our industry. The idea of being caught off-guard by it and not addressing it is unacceptable.”
But also notes his concern:
Not knowing exactly what AI is going to mean or do in the next months and years gives me some pause and some concerns. But I absolutely acknowledge that it's going to be a part of the music industry and the artistic community and society at large.
