1/ Meta’s AI Sandbox hoping to bring back advertisers
Advertisers…
Are you ready to have some fun?
Because Meta's AI playground has arrived.
[The News] Called the AI Sandbox, Meta has announced the creation of a virtual playground for advertisers to test and employ new generative AI advertising tools to boost platform ads.
Meta's goal is to use Sandbox to learn not only what marketers like and dislike but also how to optimize future product releases.
If you are one of the lucky few who are granted access to the Sandbox first, you will be introduced to three initial beta projects:
Text variation
Background generation
Image outcropping
The three AI advertising tools are designed to boost ad creativity and overall engagement, resulting in increased sales conversions.
[Why this matters] Since mid-2022, when Meta revealed its first fall in advertising revenue, this announcement represents an opportunity to entice advertisers to return to the platform.
Looking forward… As stated previously, the AI Sandbox has only been released to a select group of advertisers for testing and feedback purposes.
But for everyone else, Meta announced that in the near future, it will gradually extend access to more advertisers as well as add more features for users to “play with”.

2/ Louisa: Goldman Sachs’ AI-powered networking platform
Goldman Sachs has announced its own AI-powered social networking platform.
Think LinkedIn, but for employees.
[The News] Called Louisa, Goldman Sachs’ new networking platform “enables users to connect and share information in an intuitive way.”
Louisa creates deeper and more comprehensive business-relevant profiles on an organization's people, teams, positions, universities, alumni, communities, and clients by combining system-generated and user-provided data.
It's meant to get the right information to the right people at the right time.
In short, improve client relationships.
Looking forward… Right now, the platform has 25,000 monthly active users and is reportedly growing with 5x engagement year to date.
It doesn’t stop there.
The founder, Rohan Doctor, is hoping to grow the networking platform beyond Goldman Sachs employees.

3/ Using AI-powered cameras to stop illegal elephant poaching
According to the WWF, due to illegal elephant poaching for ivory, there are only roughly 40,000–50,000 elephants left surviving in the wild...
…putting them on the endangered species list.
But with the help of AI, all this could change.
[The News] According to Fox News, Dutch tech startup Hack the Planet and Stirling University academics have developed an AI camera that can recognize animals and humans.
How was it done? 5 camera systems took over 800 photographs over the course of 217 days to teach the AI system to identify animal species.
The accuracy rate of recognizing elephants?
82%, with an average alert time of 7 minutes.
Dr. Robin Whytock, a researcher at the University of Stirling, stated in the study:
“ Real-time data from smart cameras and other sensors could revolutionize how we monitor and protect the world's most threatened ecosystems”

4/ BuzzFeed’s 1st quarter financial results, post AI layoffs
We've all heard the news: BuzzFeed replaced 12% of its employees with artificial intelligence.
And as a result, the company’s stock price initially rose by two times.
Well, 4 months later, here are the company’s first quarter 2023 financial results:
BuzzFeed delivered Q1 revenues of $67.2 million, declining 27% compared to the first quarter of 2022
Net loss was $36.3 million
Adjusted EBITDA loss was $20.2 million
Could this be a result of AI-generated content turning away readers and advertisers?
Maybe…maybe not. Only time will truly tell.
But looking forward…BuzzFeed expects:
Overall revenues in the range of $76 to $81 million
Adjusted EBITDA in the range of $0 to $4 million
