AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ Meta reveals its own AI chip
[The News] On Thursday, Meta officially revealed its plan to build an infrastructure backbone specifically built and designed for AI.
The main announcements:
A custom silicon chip made for training and operating AI models
A data center optimized for AI
The 2nd phase of Meta’s 16,000 GPU supercomputer for AI research
Release of CodeCompose, developed to assist software developers
[Why this matters] If it hasn’t become apparent already, Meta is focused on taking control of how the chips will operate in future Meta AI projects.
By building a chip specific to the company’s purposes, they can customize it for specific “meta” needs and test it without the need to depend on a third-party chip supplier.
Looking forward… According to the Meta blog post:
“…we’ll see increased specialization and customization in chip design, purpose-built and workload-specific AI infrastructure, new systems and tooling for deployment at scale, and improved efficiency in product and design support.”
The hope is that this will help Meta “continue leading in AI over the next decade and beyond.”
2/ Twitter is suing Microsoft over AI data use
[The News] According to one of Elon Musk’s lawyers for Twitter, he is accusing Microsoft of utilizing the social platform’s data for its own AI services.
Here are some of the allegations from the letter:
Microsoft was supposed to tell Twitter how it planned to use the data, but it didn't do that for six of the eight Microsoft apps that used Twitter data.
At least one Microsoft app sent Twitter data to a number of virtual locations that "referenced a government entity or agency."
[Why this matters] The key here is the communication between the companies, or the lack thereof.
The lawyer, Alex Spiro, stated that despite the data limitations set by Twitter, Microsoft was still able to get access to over 26 billion tweets in 2022.
Spiro did not provide any context for his claims.
And looking forward… it looks like Frank Shaw, Microsoft’s spokesman, will “respond appropriately” and that “we look forward to continuing our long term partnership”.
To be continued…

AI News: The Shorts 🩳
3/ Sting, legendary musician, battles AI
[The News] Sting, the legendary musician, tells the BBC that musicians face “a battle” when it comes to AI and songwriting.
His thoughts?
Sting compares AI-generated music to watching a movie using CGI and says that “it doesn’t impress me at all”.
For Sting, AI might work for electronic dance music. But when it comes to human emotion, AI music just doesn’t do it for him.
For now…Sting isn’t completely against AI. He believes that AI can be a useful tool. BUT…
In his words: “The tools are useful, but we have to be driving them. I don't think we can allow the machines to just take over. We have to be wary."
FYI: In recent news, the US Copyright Office said that AI art and music can't be protected by copyright because they aren't made by humans.
4/ Neeve shuts down with new AI focus
[The News] Neeva, the privacy-focused search company, announced that it is shutting down its consumer search engine and instead…
Focusing on AI use cases. Why?
They wrote in the company blog post that “acquiring users has been really hard” in the current economic environment…
Making it clear that its current product just isn’t sustainable anymore.
The final decision was based on three main factors:
The business’ current progress
The current funding environment
The ability to grow and adapt in the search space
Looking forward… For the next few weeks, Neeva.com and its consumer search product will be offline.
Paid subscribers will get a refund for unused credits, and all user data will be deleted as a result of the shift.

Recently downloaded the Traini app for my furry friend and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations. The app provides a variety of courses ranging from basic obedience training to more advanced tricks like skateboarding and surfing.
