AI News: The Headliners π
1/ Nvidia joins the $1 Trillion Club
[The News] Congrats, Nvidia! Youβve joined the $1 Trillion Clubβfor a few hours at least.
On Tuesday, Nvidiaβs share prices shot up by 5%, giving it just enough boost to enter the Trillion-Dollar Club.
Just last week, the companyβs stock prices had already soared by more than 25%, given the clear demand in the AI space.
[Why this matters] Nvidia is THE leader in the AI chip space, and by the looks of it, the chip giant isnβt slowing down any time soon.
The AI tech wave is continuing to exponentially grow as Nvidia works hard to meet demand.
Looking forward⦠Nvidia is currently in 1st place. But for how long?
Only time will tell.
Rivals AMD and Intel (and big tech companies like Microsoft and Meta) are taking this opportunity to create proprietary chips of their own, hoping to either catch up or beat Nvidia in the chip race.
2/ Another AI godfather speaks out & admits to feeling βlostβ
[The News] Professor Yoshua Bengio, 1 of the 3 βgodfathersβ of AI, recently admitted to the BBC that he felt βlostβ over his lifeβs work in the AI space.
His main concern? The βbad actorsβ of the worldβ¦
AKAβ¦military, terrorists, or those who simply want revenge.
He states: ββ¦so if it's easy to program these AI systems to ask them to do something very bad, this could be very dangerous. If they're smarter than us, then it's hard for us to stop these systems or to prevent damage.β
In short: bad people using AI for destruction.
[Why this matters] AI is advancing quickly, for better or for worse, so it makes sense why Bengio, who has spent his life advancing AI, is concerned.
Even with his recent involvement in warning people about the future of AI, he says that it has been βchallengingβ and the only way forward right now is to βengage, discuss, and encourage others to think with you.β
Looking forward⦠Bengio believes that all companies building AI products need to be registered.
He recommends audits in high-risk sectors like motorized vehicles and believes that certifications and ethical training are needed for those closest to AI systems.

3/ Human extinction is near. AI is to blame.
Another day, another open letter signed. Hereβs the skinny:
[The News] In another open letter signed by hundreds of scientists and tech industry leaders, the statement warns people that AI could completely wipe out humanity.
I.E. Mass extinction
Comparing AI to nuclear war, the Center for AI Safety states in the letter:
βMitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear warβ
[Why this matters] So why now? Well, because AI is alive and very well, and regulation is simply TOO slow.
While the letter might come off as ringing alarm bells (and quite loudly)β¦
β¦in reality, the Center for AI Safety released the letter because it believes that AI βhas the potential to profoundly benefit the world, provided that we can develop and use it safely.β
The goal here should be to reduce societal-scale risks.
4/ Snapchat My AI, upgraded
[The News] On Wednesday, Snapchat announced the launch of a new generative AI tool that will allow Snapchat+ users to send Snaps of their current activities to the in-app chatbot, My AI, and receive a generative Snap in response.
For exampleβ¦
β‘οΈ Snap a picture of your dog and send it to My AIβ¦
You might receive information about the breed.
β‘οΈ Snap a picture of your groceriesβ¦
You might receive a recipe containing those ingredients.
Looking forwardβ¦ On first impression, it doesnβt look like there are many use cases for the new feature other than entertainment.
Overall, the My AI feature hasnβt been well received, as many are concerned about privacy.
And again, Snapchat states that βSnaps will be stored and may be used to improve the product experience.β
So if you are one of the resistant ones, be careful of what you are sending My AI if you donβt want your information stored.
