AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ US gov. restricts AI chip exports to China, drama ensues
[The News] According to the Wall Street Journal, the US federal government seems a bit concerned about China’s AI development and is considering further restrictions on exports of high-powered chips to China.
And once the news hit... DOMINO EFFECT!
Nvidia stocks are down. AMD down. Marvell down. Qualcomm down.
[Why this matters] Like it or not, the United States continues to depend on China for manufacturing in various industries.
So how will withholding technology affect trading and business tension?
Well, according to one Wall Street Strategist, the restrictions could “turn into almost a geopolitical economic warfare issue.”
…and most likely exacerbate other pending issues between the two powerhouse countries.
The strategist continues by stating that “China controls a lot of the supply of other products to the US. They're not going to sit back here. They'll strike back at the US in other ways…”
…They'll go after some US companies that have very, very, big businesses.”
Looking forward… Nvidia does admit that while the restrictions will not effect the company in the immediate…
Long-term, it will have a major negative impact as China takes up over 20% of its business.
Stay tuned for restriction updates…
2/ Pedophiles earn 💰 using AI-generated child pornography
Ickky.
[The News] The BBC reports that pedophiles are using AI to create and monetize AI-generated child pornography.
How so?
Abusers are using Japanese social media platform Pixiv, which is popular among users of manga and anime, as well as sites like Patreon to hide content (or links to it) behind a paywall.
At this point, according to the BBC, photos are being generated in massive quantities each month, while abusers are also linking sites to the “real thing.”
[The AI] So what AI system are these pedophiles using to generate these photos?
We all know it: Stable Diffusion.
Here’s the short and simple process documented by the BBC:
Pedophiles make images using AI software
They promote pictures on platforms such as Japanese picture sharing website called Pixiv
These accounts have links to direct customers to their more explicit images, which people can pay to view on accounts on sites such as Patreon
[Why this matters] This is a prime example of how the developmental speed of AI is far exceeding its regulation speed.
While the BBC reached out to Stable Diffusion, Pixiv, and Patreon with all 3 “prohibiting” misuse of their platforms, including sharing and/or generating child sexual abuse material….
It’s clear that abusers are finding loophole after loophole to continue promoting and making money off their AI-generated content, regardless of these companies’ attempts at stopping it.
A quote to mention:
"The speed with which these emerging technologies have been co-opted by abusers is breath-taking but not surprising, as companies who were warned of the dangers have sat on their hands while mouthing empty platitudes about safety," said Anna Edmundson, the charity's head of policy and public affairs.
Looking forward…Companies that fail to take preventative measures against grooming, live-streaming, child sexual abuse material, and banned photos of children will be subject to hefty fines under the Online Safety Law.
