AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ Sam Altman testifies and demands AI regulation
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stood before Congress to speak about AI and its need for regulation.
Here’s what was covered in a jiffy…
AI was frequently linked to the rise of social media and how near-future AI regulation should not make the same mistakes as before.
Numerous times, lawmakers brought up Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. While useful for the early internet era, Altman agreed that a new system would need to be put in place for AI.
Altman: “For a very new technology, we need a new framework. Certainly companies like ours bear a lot of responsibility for the tools that we put out in the world, but tool users do as well.”
During the hearing, lawmakers did not agree on or formulate any specific proposals yet, but ideas were bounced around, including forming new agencies to regulate AI.
By the end… Altman was praised for his open and honest conversations about AI.
Chair Richard Blumenthal compliments Altman and says, "Some of the Big Tech companies are under consent decrees, which they have violated. That’s a far cry from the kind of cooperation that Sam Altman has promised. And given his track record, I think it seems to be pretty sincere.”
2/ An open-source Stable Diffusion model, announced
We all know Stable Diffusion, the popular AI image generator model.
[The News] Well, according to Stability AI, the creator, it is releasing a new open-source platform called StableStudio.
In a press release released by the company, it states that StableStudio “marks a fresh chapter” and enforces the company’s “dedication to advancing open-source development.”
[Why this matters] Anything open-source is powerful because a community is in charge of coming together to achieve a goal.
Stability AI will undoubtedly benefit the most from this announcement, as it allows developers to think "outside the box," beyond what their platform may have never imagined.
Improvement and experimentation are essential, especially at the start of something as scary and new as AI.
Looking forward… StabilityAI will ideally have a better grasp of how to navigate AI image generation and where to invest its time and energy as a result of open-sourcing.
Simply put, if you want something to grow, let it go and see what happens.

3/ Claim: China’s ChatGPT-like bot, Ernie, is void of hallucinations
[The News] During an interview with Reuters, China’s Baidu CEO Robin Li stated that the company’s AI chatbot Ernie won’t make mistakes on “important and sensitive topics”.
[The AI] If you are unaware of Ernie, it is the Chinese company’s version of ChatGPT. As it stands, it is still waiting for government approval.
[Why this matters] The problem with chatbots like ChatGPT is their ability to claim and make up information that just isn’t true… aka hallucinate.
Li states that, “For important and sensitive topics, we have to make sure artificial intelligence will not hallucinate…Given that LLM (large-language model) is more or less a probabilistic model, this task is not trivial at all.”
Looking forward… The key here is that Baidu is working closely with the Chinese government to regulate its AI.
The benefit here? Baidu can market itself as a trusted leader moving into the AI space.
Because China is a socialist country, cooperating is the best approach to be on the good side of the government…
And Baidu is definitely following through.
4/ Grandfather scammed out of $1,000 after AI voice scam
[The News] According to GMA, a grandfather in Texas was scammed out of $1,000 while trying to save his grandson. The culprit?
An AI-generated voice scam.
Here’s how it went down:
The father receives a distressed call from his “grandson”, Christian.
The call using Christian’s voice states that Christian had been in an accident while on vacation in Mexico and required money to get out of the issue.
The grandfather sends the $1,000 to the scam caller.
In the end… Christian’s father was able to reach Christian and verify that it was a scam call, as Christian was attending college in Dallas.
Hall, the father, told GMA that "what's scary is my father is totally off the grid. He doesn't have any social media accounts. He doesn't even have an email. But the fact that they still connected my son, that makes it even scarier.”
PSA…Scam callers only need 3 seconds of your voice to replicate it. So please be careful.
