AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ Sam Altman breaks silence on Musk's open letter
[The News] During a video appearance at an MIT event, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, addressed the open letter signed by Elon Musk and over 25,000 others requesting that AI development be paused for at least 6 months.
Here are some points to note from the address:
While Altman agrees with some points of the letter, he also feels that the letter was “missing most technical nuance about where we need to pause it.”
He also comments on the safety moving forward and says, “I think moving with caution and an increasing rigor for safety issues is really important.”
He continues to address the letter and says, “We are doing other things on top of GPT-4 that I think have all sorts of safety issues that are important to address and were totally left out of the letter.”
Looking forward… Sam Altman confirmed that OpenAI is not currently training ChatGPT GPT-5 and “won’t for sometime.”
Unfortunately, this statement and others mentioned previously do not alleviate the safety concerns surrounding AI or explain what should be done about them.
As we wait for regulation, GPT-4 is still continuing to improve as we speak, so regardless of what number is tacked on, AI will continue to become more powerful by the second.

2/ Amazon announces Bedrock AI platform (and it doesn’t disappoint)
Just last week, we were questioning Amazon’s silence in the AI space.
This week, we are reporting their AI release: Bedrock.
[The News] On Thursday, Amazon announced that Bedrock is now part of the AWS family. (Welcome, welcome. We’ve been expecting you!)
According to Amazon, Bedrock will be a cloud service with a suite of technologies aimed at giving other companies the tools they need to develop their own chatbots and image generation AI.
For example, if you wanted to build your own AI product, you could use Amazon’s Titan LLM as well as Stability AI’s text-to-image service.
(Think…your own AI Chipotle bowl, with extra, extra guac.)
Right now, the language models available for use are Amazon Titan, AI2I, Anthropic, and Stability AI.
Take the foundational models that you’d like, piece them together, and build off of them.
[Why this matters] Amazon's approach to deploying its generative AI model is intended to democratize access by allowing anyone to build and customize a generative AI-based application.
According to Amazon, this will give AWS customers “flexibility and choice to use the best models for their specific needs.”
Looking forward… Bedrock’s available models are currently limited to the ones listed above.
But you can expect more models to be offered via Bedrock.
It looks like Amazon is staying on brand. 👏🏼

AI News: The Shorts 🩳
3/ 50-minute podcast sounds like Joe Rogan…but it’s not.
[The News] A deepfake interview between Joe Rogan and Sam Altman was conducted using AI language models.
But here’s the thing: Neither one knew about it.
Take a look for yourself. Could you differentiate between the real and the AI?
According to the YouTube account @TheJoeRoganAIExperience, it states that “This video depicts a fictional podcast between Joe Rogan and Sam Altman, with all content generated using AI language models. The ideas and opinions expressed in the podcast are not reflective of the thoughts of Joe Rogan or Sam Altman.”
Joe’s response?
He tweeted, “ This is going to get very slippery, kids”
Looking forward…As public figures such as Rogan and Trump have already been replicated, this could become a bigger issue than it already is.
Who’s next? The 2024 presidential candidates?
To the unaware, they’d never be able to tell the difference.

4/ AI-generated music to be taken down
[The News] According to the Financial Times, Universal Music Group is requesting that music streaming services like Spotify and Apple take down AI-generated music.
[Why this matters] It's no secret that AI has raised concerns about stealing artists' work.
UMG is aware of this and is attempting to protect the rights of artists as AI companies are using streaming service music catalogs to train AI technology. (seems a bit sus’ to me.)
UMG spokesperson told the FT: “We have a moral and commercial responsibility to our artists to work to prevent the unauthorized use of their music and to stop platforms from ingesting content that violates the rights of artists and other creators. We expect our platform partners will want to prevent their services from being used in ways that harm artists.”
Copyright issues have always been a problem. But now?

Curious about AI-generated music?
Here’s an example from the YouTube channel, PluggingAI.
According to the page, all of the content uploaded is parodies of songs made using AI models.
