AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ China’s Alibaba reveals their version of ChatGPT
[The News] In a filmed demonstration, Alibaba, the e-commerce giant based in China, announced that it is joining the AI chatbot race by debuting its very own.
The name? Tongyi Qianwen.
Similar to ChatGPT and Google Bard, the Chinese version operates in a similar fashion and will be able to help users write first drafts, emails, plan trips, and guide shoppers towards making the best purchases from Alibaba’s online platform.
[Why this matters] China is well-known for restricting what its citizens can access on the internet.
And it is also no secret that chatbots either hallucinate or create false information.
How these two factors mix? It’s still up in the air.
But the Chinese government is already putting rules in place to keep AI in line with China’s political views.
Looking forward… Like Microsoft and Google’s chatbots, Tongyi Qianwen will be integrated into Alibaba’s line of products, such as DingTalk (similar to the US version of Slack) and Tmall Genie (similar to Amazon Alexa).
In the demo, CEO Daniel Zhang announced that the AI LLM will be available to current and future Alibaba clients to build their own customized LLM.
With that announcement, you can expect China’s AI race to quickly gain momentum as Alibaba goes public with its model.

2/ Elon Musk's latest move: A big step towards transforming Twitter with AI
[The News] Despite Elon Musk recently signing an open letter to temporarily pause the development of AI, it’s reported that he has purchased 10,000 GPUs for use at Twitter.
The reason? No one really knows. But some suspect it is for AI development.
And according to Insider News, it could be for 2 potential reasons: To improve search results on Twitter and to improve advertising efforts.
Because Twitter's main revenue stream comes from advertising, the development of AI for Twitter will be critical if it can help businesses better target specific audiences.
[Why this matters] Back in 2018, Elon Musk tried to take over OpenAI but was denied the position.
Although he still continued to fund OpenAI’s research for awhile, Musk eventually cut funding, which later resulted in Microsoft’s investment.
From an outsider’s perspective, this could be Musk’s way of getting back at OpenAI.
But with such little information, it looks like Twitter’s AI presence is still hidden in the shadows. So for now…
…we can only wait and see what Musk is up to next. Stay tuned.

AI News: The Shorts 🩳
3/ How AI is helping doctors catch lung cancer before it's too late
[The News] According to NBC news, doctors are now able to use AI to detect lung cancer years before a potential diagnosis.
Here’s the research done by MIT.
[The AI] Sybil, the AI tool, is able to detect abnormal growths and patterns that a doctor might not be able to see from a CT scan. By analyzing a 3D image, Sybil can point out concerns that may have come back negative.
[Why this matters] Lung cancer is currently the 3rd most common cancer in the US, according to the CDC.
If the FDA approves of the AI, Sybil will be able to save lives and give doctors the opportunity to treat cases that may have gone undetected initially.
Looking forward… The biggest concern with Sybil right now is medical bias and overdiagnosis.
The information used to train medical AI models is not currently based on a range of diverse medical data, such as race, ethnicity, and background.
This could cause a misdiagnosis of patients or suggest the wrong treatments for a specific demographic or race.

4/ AI can now tell you if you have a cold
[The News] Based on research done at the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology in Surat, AI is now able to detect whether or not someone has a cold.
How so?
Well, researchers analyzed 630 voice patterns and were able to detect that 111 of those people had colds.
[The AI] By training the AI model on vocal rhythms, the model was able to detect minute variances in tone that a human ear may not be able to pick up.
This variation was then attributed to a cold-related vocal pattern.
Looking forward… As per the study, the researchers and team proposed that the AI features shown could be later used to “diagnose common colds and related disorders.”
By getting ahead of the problem, you mitigate the risk.

5/ ChatGPT-based app, Be My Eyes, helps the blind “see”
[The News] Reported by CBS news, Danish phone app Be My Eyes is powered by ChatGPT and has the ability to “analyze images” and “explain the images to the blind user.”
[How it works] When the user snaps a photo of either an item or their surroundings using the app, the image is sent to ChatGPT’s image detector, which then explains the image to the user.
[Why this matters] Without sight, blind individuals have to rely on either guide dogs, canes, or sometimes strangers to help visualize surroundings.
AI services like Be My Eyes are just the start of giving the blind more independence and confidence when navigating the world around them.
