AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ Grimes, Musk’s ex-girlfriend, approves of AI-generated music
Just last week, an AI-generated song replicating Drake and The Weeknd’s voices went viral and was taken down a couple days later.
Now, the singer Grimes is challenging the status quo and showing her support for the AI music world.
Copyright? Get Rid of It!
[The News] Last Sunday, Grimes told her fans that she encourages people to use her voice to generate AI music.
How so? She will be uploading vocal stems for artists to use in their music processes.
The benefit? Both she and the creator will split royalties 50/50 if a song becomes successful.
The only rule is that offensive and “toxic” lyrics are a no-no.
Grimes explained that “Grimes is an art project, not a music project. The ultimate goal has always been to push boundaries rather than have a nice song. The point is to poke holes in the simulation and see what happens, even if it's a bad outcome for us."
Looking forward… This causes a bit of a ripple in the art community/AI debate. Just last week, Universal Music Group asked that all AI-generated music be taken down from music streaming sites.
If that is the case, the question now becomes: if an artist like Grimes gives consent to people using her AI voice…
Should the songs be given the OK to upload? If so, where does UMG draw the line?

2/ GOP launches AI-generated attack ad against Biden
If you haven’t seen the video, take a moment to watch it for yourself.
[The News] The Republic Party released the above ad attacking President Joe Biden as he announced he would be running for re-election.
Titled “Beat Biden”, the AI images are close representations of Biden, but to us… the images do impart an “AI-ness” to the images. (Could you tell they were AI-generated?)
Even with the disclaimer in the upper left-hand corner stating that the images were generated by AI, it makes one wonder how far politics will go in leveraging AI to get voter attention.
[Why this matters] It is currently unknown what AI software was used to create the images shown in the video.
However, as time goes on, it will be informative to see what other ads are generated by AI and whether they are contextually accurate.
Mat Honan, the editor-in-chief at the MIT Technology Review, pointed out that the context of the images did not make sense and the AI did not capture Biden accurately.

3/ Dangerous AI? The FTC is after you
[The News] The Federal Trade Commission has warned that it will "not hesitate to crack down" on harmful AI-related business practices.
Here are the bullets:
Most of the attention has been on those who use automated tools to amplify bias in hiring, productivity monitoring, and housing and loan decisions.
FTC Chair Lina Khan states that: “A handful of powerful firms today control the necessary raw materials—not only the vast stores of data but also the cloud services and computing power that startups and other businesses rely on to develop and deploy AI products.”
Khan continues and says, “There is no AI exemption to the laws on the books.”
Others present: Charlotte Burrows, chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke; Rohit Chopra, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Looking forward… At this time, no companies have been named, but as the US government begins the AI regulation process, it will not be surprising to see AI products change or disappear as laws begin to regulate the currently unregulated AI.

4/ Amazon reviews: AI invasion
Amazon does not like review abuse, but what about AI-generated reviews?
[The News] First reported by CNBC, Amazon buyers are starting to notice a trend in the review section:
AI-generated reviews.
Here’s one for your viewing pleasure:
Looking forward… Amazon has yet to respond to the reviews, but given its current anti-abuse policies (rewarding people for reviews outside of the Amazon Vine program), it will be intriguing to see how Amazon might use its own artificial intelligence or software to monitor even more stringently.
So the next time you shop online, be careful and don’t trust everything you read.

5/ AI recruiter: Yay or Nay?
[The News] In research done by the Pew Research Center, 11,004 American adults were surveyed to help understand how they felt about AI being used in the hiring process.
The result? 66% of those polled said they would be uncomfortable if AI was used to determine whether or not they would get the job.
[Why this matters] On the one hand, some respondents expressed concern that AI is "structurally biased on race or socioeconomic status" and does not consider nonverbal cues such as body language.
On the flip side, some believe that AI might be less biased and prejudiced than a human being.
What’s your opinion?
