1/ Snapchat’s My AI under fire 🔥
It’s been less than 2 weeks since Snapchat’s My AI went live to the public, and people are already speaking out against it. Here’s the tea. 🍵
[The News] Lyndsi Lee, a mother from Missouri, spoke to CNN and talked about her concerns with My AI.
The concern: Because it is now accessible to anyone and everyone, children are able to gain access to the chatbot without supervision, and at this time, only Snapchat paid premium subscribers are able to disable them.
Lee told CNN, “I don’t think I’m prepared to know how to teach my kid how to emotionally separate humans and machines when they essentially look the same from her point of view. I just think there is a really clear line [Snapchat] is crossing.”
To back Lee’s statement, others have called the chatbot “creepy” and "terrifying,” as possible privacy breaches are at the forefront of users’ minds.
Looking forward… Snapchat has responded to CNN, stating that it is continuing to improve My AI based on community feedback and is working to put more safeguards in place to keep its users safe.
The company also stated that, as with its other tools, users are not required to interact with My AI if they do not wish to.

2/ AI Regulation Update: Transparency is Key 🔑
In case you missed it, here is the most recent EU update that is shaping future AI law.
Under the updated proposals, AI tools will be put into four groups based on how dangerous they are thought to be: minimal, limited, high, and unacceptable.
Concerns could include biometric surveillance, spreading false information, or using language that makes people feel bad about themselves.
For now, high-risk tools won't be banned, but those who use them will have to be very open about how they work.
Companies that use generative AI tools like ChatGPT or image generators will also have to reveal any copyrighted materials they used to build their systems.
[Why this matters] The current provisions provide a middle ground between conservative and liberal viewpoints regarding AI.
The key point here is that instead of simply prohibiting the use of copyrighted information to train AI models, the group was able to reach an agreement on transparency-led AI.

3/ Sorry, nuclear bombs…No AI for you 😢
This week, it was announced that legislation prohibiting AI from launching nuclear weapons had been passed.
The Block Nuclear Launch by Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Act prohibits the use of federal funding for an automated nuclear launch that lacks "meaningful human control."
[Why this matters] Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), one of the individuals who introduced the bill stated that “As we live in an increasingly digital age, we need to ensure that humans hold the power alone to command, control, and launch nuclear weapons—not robots…We need to keep humans in the loop on making life or death decisions to use deadly force, especially for our most dangerous weapons.”
Looking forward… Representative Ted Lieu (D-MA) also spoke and said, “It is our job as Members of Congress to have responsible foresight when it comes to protecting future generations from potentially devastating consequences.”

4/ Speech clones & AI-generated music take over radio station
[The News] For 13 hours, the French-language station Couleur 3 used the cloned voices of five human presenters to take over the station and air music generated either partially or entirely by AI.
[The AI] The software company Respeecher helped the station clone the presenters’ voices.
It took three months to train the AI to understand the needs of the station and match the vibe of the show.
Want your mind to be blown? Watch this 5-minute demo 🤯:
[Why this matters] So, will AI replace the station’s on-air talent and personnel?
Here’s what the station chief had to say about that:
“I think if we become ostriches… we put our heads in the sand and say, ‘Mon Dieu, there’s a new technology! We’re all going to die!’ then yeah, we’re going to die because it (AI) is coming, whether we like it or not. We want to master the technology so we can then put limits on it.”
In short? Recognize the potential danger in order to reduce future risk.
No harm, for now.
