AI News: The Headliners 🏁
1/ ChatGPT users are down for the first time
Rising like a rocket, falling like a feather. Is this just the beginning?
[The News] The data firm, Similarweb, reported that ChatGPT users fell almost 10% for the month of June.
And according to data from Sensor Tower, the downloads for the mobile app that was launched in May have also been in slow decline.
Uptick in output of false information
Companies banning employee use of chatbots
AI companies decrease output quality to save costs
Summer break for students
Pending regulation for AI
[Why this matters] There’s no doubt that each one of these factors may or may not play a role in the sudden decrease in chatbot users.
The hype could just be dying down a bit, but let’s be reminded that while generative AI has been a hot topic for the past 8 months…
It is still too early to make any precise conclusions.
Which brings up the question:
Are you using ChatGPT less than you were when it first came out?
2/ New York City's new law on AI & hiring
Looking for a job in the concrete jungle of NYC?
Well, a new AI law that took effect on Wednesday, July 5th, has been put in place to protect you from AI’s shortcomings.
Here are the deets:
[The News] Under New York’s new rule, employers or employment agencies that decide to use AEDT must be transparent with job candidates when it’s used as a decision-maker during the hiring process.
The reason? To avoid bias.
[What is AEDT?] AEDT stands for automated employment decision tool and is based on “machine learning, statistical modeling, data analytics, or artificial intelligence”.
[Why this matters] To automate or not to automate?
That’s a big question for companies when it comes to saving time and money during the hiring process.
But it also brings up problems like racism and sexism…
And AI exhibits both.
Looking forward… For now, the law is a good start when it comes to how companies use AI in the hiring process moving forward.
But filling gaps to cover other bias categories like ageism and disabilities should also be considered.

AI News: The Shorts 🩳
3/ Twitter shuts down to fight data scrapers
AI freeloaders…Twitter is off-limits!
[The News] This past week, Twitter blocked non-users from being able to access content on its social media site.
Why?
To send a warning signal to people trying to scrape free data to train AI models.
[Why this matters] The current debate is about how the social media companies will go about giving the public access to this data.
On one hand, social platforms like Reddit believe in charging for the information on their sites.
On the other hand, the data was only possible because of the people using that specific site, so contributors feel they should be compensated.
Looking forward…Public access to Twitter has since been restored. But how it will go about resolving the data scraping issue is TBD.
4/ ChatGPT scores in the top 1% on creativity test
[The News] According to research from the University of Montana, it concluded that ChatGPT’s GPT-4 AI model “matched the top 1% of human thinkers on a standard creativity test.”
How it was done?
Using the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, a tool used to access human creativity…
8 responses generated by ChatGPT and 24 university students answers were collected
Scores were compared against those of 2,700 college students who took the tests in 2016
The results placed ChatGPT’s AI-generated answers in the top 1% for originality and fluency and in the 97th percentile for flexibility.
Also…ChatGPT beat the majority of college students nationally.
WHOA. 😳

I wonder how usage of GPT-4 is? A few months ago ChatGPT was the only way for most people to use cutting edge AI. Now there are many ways, including specialised tools that call AI APIs, and other chat interfaces to AI. For example, the creator of TypingMind says he's making $30k per month from it.
